Opening in September 2006, the Institute for Writing Studies reflects the ongoing commitment of St. Johnís University to the promotion of high-quality writing. Writing Centers centers are located in the Main Library and in Mahoney Hall on the Staten Island. The Writing Centers are for students of all levels, as well as faculty, staff, and administration. The faculty of the First-Year program oversees the University's core writing courses and the Writing Across the Curriculum program. The Writing Institute supports the writing needs of all St. Johnís students across the disciplines, promotes student writing initiatives, and assists faculty with the pedagogy of writing.

The Writing Center maintains a selective collection of materials covering literature, the process of writing, composition, rhetoric and writing reference materials. This is supplemented by the Libraries Collections. The University Libraries assist the Writing Center in acquiring new materials and collaborate in ongoing and future projects.
